Basic Biostatistics in R
Ziele
This Core Methods course is part of the Public Health Sciences Course Program and lays the foundation for the subsequent courses Introduction to Epidemiology and Study Design, Diagnostic Test Evaluation, and Linear and Logistic Regression Modelling in R.
At the end of this course, participants shall be able to:
- Perform descriptive analysis of data sets
- Apply various methods for making inferences about means, proportions, rates and commonly used measures of association
Inhalte
- Common statistical tools for describing numeric and categorical variables
- Basic concepts of inferential statistics: sampling variation, standard error, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, and p-values
- Confidence intervals for means, proportions and rates
- One- and two-sample hypothesis tests for means, proportions and rates
- Confidence intervals for odds ratios, risk ratios, and rate ratios
- Methods for time to event data: Life tables and Kaplan-Meier estimator
Arbeitsweise / Programm
Lectures with exercises in R for hands-on practice. The learning outcomes will be assessed by a short exam.

Zielpublikum
This course targets PhD students, postdocs, clinicians, and public health practitioners who would like to acquire skills in the topics.
Besonderes
Course participants are expected to have basic knowledge in R (have attended introductory course beforehand or already working with R) and are required to bring their own laptops with versions of R and RStudio installed.
The course is offered once a year.
Maths and probabilities refresher: Participants who feel uncomfortable with mathematical notation (e.g. capital-sigma for summation) and operations (e.g. exponentiation, logarithm) commonly used in statistics or are not familiar with the basic concepts of probability theory (e.g.; random variables, discrete and continuous probability distributions, expectation, variance, covariance) are strongly recommended to take this refresher.

A tertiary education degree is required. The program manager decides on the final admission. Priority is given to PhD students.
Application process: You are requested to enroll online. Seats will be allocated according to date of enrolment. Three weeks before the course/workshop at the latest, the administration will decide and inform about running or cancelling the course/workshop.

Registration fees are waived for PhD students of the University of Bern who commit to the whole course attendance. To avoid being invoiced, it is mandatory that you indicate your institute and the matriculation number upon registration for the course. Please note cancellation regulations below.

Annullierungsbestimmungen
After the closing date for registrations, the organisers will decide whether the course can take place. The decision is based on the number of registrations.
These cancellation rules apply to PhD students of the University of Bern.
Processing fee of CHF 100 will be applied for:
- Cancellations after 2 weeks before the first course day (late cancellations)
- Participants with course attendance of less than 80% of the on-site course time
- Absence on the first day of the course (considered as a late cancellation).
Course attendance must be cancelled at the latest 2 weeks before the first course day. Write an email to phs-admin.ispm@unibe.ch.
The cancellation has to be confirmed by the course coordination.
