Public Health Sciences Course Program (PHS)

Basic Biostatistics in R

In this course, you will learn basic statistical methods that are widely used in biostatistical research.

Ziele

The course is part of the Public Health Sciences Course Program and lays the foundation for the subsequent courses Introduction to Epidemiology and Study Design, Diagnostic Test Evaluation, and Linear and Logistic Regression Modelling in R. Together with the Projects in R course, these five courses cover central skills of the theme Core Methods in the Public Health Course Program.

At the end of this course, participants shall be able to:

  • Perform descriptive analysis of data sets
  • Apply various methods for making inferences about means, proportions, rates and commonly used measures of association

Inhalte

  • Common statistical tools for describing numeric and categorical variables
  • Basic concepts of inferential statistics: sampling variation, standard error, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, and p-values
  • Confidence intervals for means, proportions and rates
  • One- and two-sample hypothesis tests for means, proportions and rates
  • Confidence intervals for odds ratios, risk ratios, and rate ratios
  • Methods for time to event data: Life tables and Kaplan-Meier estimator

Arbeitsweise / Programm

Lectures with exercises in R for hands-on practice. The learning outcomes will be assessed by a short exam with an R exercise.

For an accreditation of the ECTS, a minimum of 80% attendance and active participation incl. completion of assignments and assessments are required.

Zielpublikum

This course targets PhD students, postdocs, clinicians, and public health practitioners who would like to acquire skills in the topics.

Students are required to bring their own laptops with a recently installed version of R, RStudio. The course is offered once a year.

Maths and probabilities refresher: Participants who feel uncomfortable with mathematical notation (e.g. capital-sigma for summation) and operations (e.g. exponentiation, logarithm) commonly used in statistics or are not familiar with the basic concepts of probability theory (e.g., random variables, discrete and continuous probability distributions, expectation, variance, covariance) are strongly recommended to take this refresher.

Anmelde- und Aufnahmeverfahren

A tertiary education degree is required. The program manager decides on the final admission. Priority is given to PhD students.
