Think Formative: Assessment for Learning

Learn about and try out different forms and techniques of formative assessment to assess and make visible the students’ learning process

The aim of the course is for participants to be able to....

  • describe what formative assessment is.
  • outline and use different techniques of formative assessment.
  • choose and integrate forms and techniques of formative assessment into their own teaching in a beneficial way.

Unlike summative assessment, formative assessment is primarily concerned with monitoring students' learning and making it visible. Formative assessment is therefore closely related to feedback and both elements are important aspects of the learning process. There are not only different definitions of and approaches to formative assessment, but also numerous ways and forms in which it can be used. This course is about learning more about formative assessment, getting to know and trying out different forms and methods, and developing scenarios for the participants’ own teaching.

Arbeitsweise / Programm

In addition to brief theory inputs, there will be exercises and discussions as well as individual and group work, and the focus is on the transfer to the participants' own teaching.

The CAS Higher Education at the University of Bern is aimed teachers and researchers at universities, universities of applied sciences, teacher training universities, colleges of professional education and training, and continuing education institutions. This combination of participants from various higher education institutions is a deliberate goal and one of the strengths of our program.

The course language is English.

In addition to the summative, evaluative form of assessment, there is also formative assessment designed to monitor and reflect one’s learning process. Formative assessment has been shown to be a positive facilitator of student learning. However, its success depends on how lecturers perceive, design and implement the concept and related activities in their teaching. Therefore, the course is about defining formative assessment, learning about related concepts, becoming familiar with and trying out different techniques of formative assessment, and developing suitable ways to implement it in the participants’ own teaching.
