Basics of Ethics in Health Sciences Research
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, participants will have an understanding of the basics and principles of ethics in health research, and they will have gained deeper knowledge in selected areas of research integrity, data management and open science. They will have gained knowledge and skills to recognize navigate various difficult areas of ethics in research.
Topics/Content
The course will cover topics which include the history and principles of research ethics, research integrity, conflicts of interest, ethics of authorship, essential data management practices and key issues in open access. The course aims at providing a foundational introduction to these areas, as well as reflexive and critical skills to understand the motivation for, and necessity of ethical values, principles and ethically justified research practice.
Activities / Program
The course is programmed over two days and includes a combination of seminar style interventions, with questions, group discussions and interactive activities, as well as focused group work, case studies and student presentation. It will be delivered by a team of seven academics, each of whom are experts in the topics they will be teaching.
Students will receive preparatory material in advance. The course will be assessed with an online, open book written exam with multiple choice questions.

Registration fees are waived for PhD students of the University of Bern, who commit to the whole course attendance.
- Priority for this course will be given to PhD students of the Graduate School for Health Sciences (GHS).
- To avoid being invoiced, it is mandatory that you indicate your institute and the matriculation number upon registration for the course.

Cancellation regulations
These cancellation rules apply to PhD students of the University of Bern.
Processing fee of CHF 100 will be applied for:
- Cancellations after 3 weeks before the first course day (late cancellations)
- Participants with course attendance of less than 80% of the on-site course time
- Absence on the first day of the course (considered as a late cancellation)
Course attendance must be cancelled no later than 3 weeks before the first course day. Write an email to phs-admin.ispm@unibe.ch.
